In Meru we find the Meru National Park. This is a semi arid park with 13 rivers and springs and thus it has an impressive variety in vegetation, landscape and wildlife species. The park has a rhino sanctuary which is home to over 40 white rhino and 20 black rhino.
Meru National Park is the least visited of Kenya’s national parks and reserves. It is an unspoiled wilderness. It is known as the complete wilderness. It has comparatively fewer visitors than other parks and reserves. For those safari goers who want to stay away from the crowds, Meru National Park is ideal for you. It was here that George and Joy Adamson returned Elsa the lioness to the wild as depicted in the film Born Free.
Meru National Park is a 870 sq.km.The park is situated on the equator east of Mount Kenya. Its landscape is characterized by stands of dense riverine forests of doum and raffia palm trees, rolling hills and rocky outcrops or kopjes. The vegetation of the park is mainly thorn bush land in the north, wooded grassland in the west and open grassland elsewhere. A good number of permanent rivers flow through the park thus opportunities for fishing and rafting are available. The roads in the park have been improved so as to enable one have a good safari experience.

How to Get to Meru National Park
By Road: Access from Nairobi is via Nyeri-Nanyuki –Meru Road. It is 348km from Nairobi.
By Air: There is an airstrip at Elsa’s Kopje and another airstrip at Kina
