ITINERARY DETAILS Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and second highest mountain in Africa. It is a hotspot for climbing and hiking. The mountain is located in Mountain Kenya National Park. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian (5199metres), Nelion (5188 metres) and Lenana (4985 metres). Some attractions at Mt.Kenya are pristine wilderness, lakes, tarns, glaciers and peaks of great beauty, mineral springs and wildlife of which are endangered and rare and those that have adapted to the high altitude. The Sirimon Track is one of the finest approaches to the peak area. It offers some of the best views of the main peaks, with a gradual climb, which can be done leisurely. We transverse the mountain by ascending the Sirimon Track . Day 1 - Nairobi-Nanyuki-Mt.kenya We leave Nairobi at 6am (latest) We arrive at Nanyuki at 10 am where we have lunch. At 11.30 am we shall depart for the Sirimon Park gate. Our Mountain trek starts from this point after a few formalities at the Gate, an easy trek in the afternoon to help acclimatization. Overnight will be at Old mosses (3300m) in the high altitude mountain cabins. By the end of the day we will have done 5 hours of walking. Day 2 - Mt.kenya The day starts at 0800 Hrs By the end of this day we shall have done about 8 hrs of walking (Leisurely). This will be a true taste of patience, endurance & determination. Ascend the Sirimon Track to Likii North Valley, in this beautiful little valley below the subsidiary peaks of Teleki and Sendeyo, two ancient parasitic vents of the main peaks (3990m).Climb out of the North Valley and into the Mackinder’s Valley, one of the broadest valleys on the mountain, with many giant groundsels. We will Camp at Shiptons Cabins of the Mackinder's Valley, just below the main peaks of Batian and Nelion (4,300m). Day 3 - Mt.Kenya The day starts at 0200 Hrs We start early so that we can reach the Peak at Sunrise Alpine ascent to the highest peak, Pt. Lenana (4985m). En route up the north face little used by tourists. Four hours of stiff walking to the summit. This will be the most challenging bit of the Mt Trek and will require a strong mind to reach the summit. At about 0730 Hrs we shall start the descend via the Naromoru route (You shall have an excellent view of the Lewis Glacier) where we shall rest at the Austrian Hut (4,720 M) for a cup of tea. At Austrian Hut you shall be able to see the normal route for the technical climb to Point Nelion & Batian. We shall start our circuit of the peaks via the American Hut Camp site & latter proceed to the Two Tarn Camp site. We shall latter trek past the Oblong Lake & Nanyuki Tarn. We shall latter ascend to Shipton Campsite where we shall be accommodated for the night. The main achievement of the day will be summiting to Point Lenana (4,985 M ) & latter going round the Main peaks giving you the best site of them. The terrain will just be amazing……. A sight to behold just to say the least Day 4 - Mt.kenya We shall depart Shipton Camp at 8.30 Am for Mt Meru Bandas via the Simba Tarn. This day you shall experience the best of the other half of the Mountain (Views of Lake Michelson, Vivianne Falls, Mintos Lakes, We shall have Lunch at “Road Head” and deviate from the main route for 40 Minutes for the NITHI FALLS (this is also a sight to behold). Later on we shall descend to Meru Bandas where you will be accommodated for the night (Hot Shower & Log fire is guaranteed in this `camp) Day 5 - Mt.kenya-Nairobi The day starts at 0800 Hrs We shall leave Mt Kenya Meru Banda’s and start our 4 Hrs walk out of the Park via Chogoria. Please note that we shall trek the first 10 Km & be picked by a Landrover (Basic car) for the rest of the 22 Km out of the park to Chogoria town. At Chogoria town we shall have lunch at a local restaurant & later be transferred to Nairobi in our standard tour van. You will later be dropped off at your hotel/airport upon arrival at Nairobi. |
