Samburu is home to the “Big Five” not the big five that you already know of lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino but of a ‘special big five’ only found in these part of Kenya. This special big five are known as the Reticulated Giraffe, Beira Oryx, Grevy Zebra, the Maasai Ostrich and the Gerenuk. Samburu is in the Northern Province of Kenya. Samburu national reserve is a rugged and semi desert park. Huge Blue Mountains serve as a backdrop to this game reserve. The park has an abundant species of birds; over 365 species have been recorded, which is considered by ornithologists a paradise for bird viewing.
The lifeline of the reserve is the Ewaso Nyiro River which is bustling with huge population of crocodiles. In the evenings one can watch the gigantic crocodiles fight over big chunks of meat.
